The San Luis Valley is ranked in the top five potato producing areas in the United States, both in acres planted and production. In 2004, the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee estimated that 65,000 acres was planted in potatoes in the Valley.
Our fertile, loose packed loam type of soil is ideal for growing potatoes here in the Valley. Because of it's ability to shift as the tubers grow, the potatoes can grow and expand easily.
We draw our water deep from the ground from supplies replenished by the pure clean sources of the headwaters of the Rio Grande River, and run off from the heavy snows of the eastern slopes of the San Juan Mountains. We also pump our water from deep underground mountain springs providing excellent irrigation for our potatoes.
