Aspen Brand Potatoes are grown in a high alpine valley in
Southern
Colorado.
At 7,625 above sea level, we are nestled between the magnificent
14,000 foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the east
and the spectacular San Juan Mountains on the west.
Farmers began growing potatoes in
Colorado's San Luis Valley about 1875, making it one of the
oldest potato growing areas in the country.
The San Luis Valley is ranked in the top five potato producing
areas in the United States, both in acres planted and
production. In 2004, the Colorado Potato Administrative
Committee estimated that 65,000 acres was planted in
potatoes in the Valley.
Our fertile, loose packed loam type of soil is ideal for growing
potatoes here in the Valley. Because of it's ability to
shift as the tubers grow, the potatoes can grow and expand
easily.
We draw our water deep from the ground from supplies replenished
by the pure clean sources of the headwaters of the Rio Grande
River, and run off from the heavy snows of the eastern slopes of
the San Juan Mountains. We also pump our water from deep
underground mountain springs providing excellent irrigation for
our potatoes.
